About Salles
 
    In the Belin-Beliet district, part of the town of Bordeaux administrative area.

Surface area : 13 797 hectares

Population : 4 562 residents (1999)

Inhabitant : the Sallois

River : L'Eyre

Town name origin : from the gallic-latin word Salomacum that means the salt market. The town sits between the river and the ancient roman road, called the Antonin way.

Salles is conveniently located from a geographical point of view.

  • 50 kms from Bordeaux (3/4 hour's drive by motorway),
  • 35 kms to the Ocean (25 minutes drive),
  • 18 kms to the coastal lakes,
  • two and a half hour's drive to the Pyrénées.

Salles is found at the junction of the North-South (A63 motorway / main road N10) and East-West (district road 108 towards the Lakes and the Land coastal axis and RD 3 towards the oceanic beaches and the Arcachon Bay).

Salles that witnesses some fine south Gironde architecture, regroups a town center and at the outskirts boroughs or "quartiers" of different size. It counts nearly 5 000 inhabitants and spreads over a 13 000 area.

The main boroughs are :

Lavignolle 9 km north-westbound,

Le Caplanne 3 km westbound,

Bilos and Le Lanot respectively 2 and 4 km sounthbound.

One loses track of the Commune history in the midst of time. Some recent archeological excavations witnesses of a human being activity dating back to the prehistorical times on the banks of the river L'Eyre, also named the "little Amazon".

When Salles was called Salomagos, it was the river L'Eyre that proved a powerful and constant mean of development and transport. It has nowadays turned into an inescapable destination for canoe lovers and environment friendly tourists alike, all of them very fond of preserved nature and wilderness.

Salles is equally reputable for is Thursday morning market and welcomes many a tourists either its differents lodgings such as camping sites, B&B's, hotels, holiday resort or at its shops.

Salles is definitely a youth orientated, active and sport loving town, that shows up through its inhabitants' vitality and Societies' dynamism.

Salles invites you to visit for a short stay and... would not mind seeing you settling down here.
